So today marked my Mom's 53rd birthday...time really flies by since it seemed like not even that long ago we were celebrating her 49th. I think in my mind she will always be under 50.
It was funny today when we went into Uchi because my mom was wearing her school tshirt which had a big Westlake logo on the front and on the back it said "Brees" and a big number on the back (referencing the New Orleans Saints Quarterback, Drew Brees who was a student at Westlake a long time ago). Everyone else there was dressed to impress but it's okay because it was her birthday and you're allowed to do whatever you want on your birthday. It's like one of those ironic situations...like, you know in movies when the servant girl actually turns out to be a princess or something? If you took a photo of the room today, no one would guess that the middle aged lady dressed in a cheesy t-shirt and tacky embroidered jeans would be the most significant person there.
Some observations about Uchi (None of which are about its food):
- It's extremely loud in there. I think the high ceilings may have accounted for this but it was so loud. We had trouble having a conversation at our table because it was just so difficult to hear each other and we felt like we had to semi-yell the entire time. My throat is actually sore now because of this.
- Uchi is dominated by the young professional crowd. Going as a family, we were definitely in the minority. Most of the tables were filled with late 20/early 30 year olds kicking off their weekend.
- We saw Austin weatherman, Jim Spencer there. He was dining with a couple as well as a younger man dressed in an urban fashion. I think Jim might be gay. Tyson Cole (head chef at Uchi) has said that gay people love his food so you never know...
The food there, of course, is divine. Portions are very small but intentionally so. Am definitely going to go back and try the chef's tasting menu if I get the chance.
